During 2015 the Greek Community at Michigan will be celebrating 170 years of providing students with rich experiences in brotherhood, sisterhood, leadership, and service. Since 1845, fraternities and sororities at the University of Michigan have offered students the opportunity to be a part of one of the oldest Michigan traditions. Intro Video
Throughout the year, the Greek Life staff and students will commemorate this milestone in various ways. We will reflect on the history and tradition of fraternities and sororities at Michigan and the impact our organizations have had on campus. Developing campus leaders, implementing progressive risk management practices, supporting social justice issues, and continuing an on-going commitment to philanthropy and service are at the core of Greek Life.
During Homecoming weekend (October 9-11) we will celebrate the Greek Community as Team 136 and Jim Harbaugh take on the Northwestern Wildcats. We will be hosting a number of events including an Open House, a tailgate and a parade of homes. On Friday afternoon alumni will be able to stop in the Michigan Union and visit with Greek Life staff and current students to learn about Greek Life today and ask questions. Collegians, alumni, and friends will gather to celebrate two great Michigan traditions – Greek Life and Football Saturdays. Sunday there will be a parade of homes, giving the history of chapter houses and the opportunity for people to see the interior of some. Do you know that there is longstanding dispute over which fraternity was first on campus? Do you remember life before the Social Environment Management Policy (i.e. no kegs)? Did your organization help to establish the Multicultural Greek Council? Did you participate in Greek Sing (the precursor to Greek Week)? We’ve compiled a historical timeline that recognizes the development of the community through the years.
Fraternities and sororities have been integral to the development of students in their collegiate years and beyond. The Greek Community has always provided educational and programmatic opportunities for students such as personal development, social responsibility, leadership development and more. Thanks to generous donors in the past, we have been able develop new and innovative programs such as a weekend retreat for chapter Presidents. In order to sustain these efforts we are continuing a fundraising campaign. Please consider making a contribution (such as $18.45 or $170.00) to offer our students even more opportunities in the future.
