Fraternity & Sorority Life

NPHC Step Show

The University of Michigan National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the governing organization for the culturally and historically African American fraternities and sororities on campus. Rooted in Pan-African culture, and adopted by Black Greek-Letter Organizations in the mid-1900s, is the tradition of stepping. Stepping is a form of percussive dance where performers (or in this case, students) use their feet, hands, and bodies to create rhythms, and partner it with singing, chanting, and calls. Black fraternal organizations step as a demonstrative way to represent their fraternities and sororities, and to share a modern derivative of African culture. This event is the University of Michigan National Pan-Hellenic Council’s largest fund raiser and a competition between the performing chapters.
