Fraternity & Sorority Life

Meet our Staff

Fraternity & Sorority Life at the University of Michigan is dedicated to the development of its diverse student body through close collaboration with the University Community, fraternity & sorority alumni, International organizations, and Ann Arbor Community. We will provide quality academic, personal, social, and service opportunities that will empower our students to serve, lead, and conduct themselves with integrity and in accordance with sound values.

A University department within Student Life, the staff is charged with supporting the fraternity and sorority community. The full-time and part-time staff members work closely with the four councils and the affiliated organizations to aid students with recruitment, intake, event planning, educational programming, social, philanthropic and logistical needs. Staff members also serve as facilitators and educators at retreats and other forums and workshops. They act as liaisons to alumni, parents, City of Ann Arbor officials, Inter/National headquarters, and University faculty and staff. Additionally, the staff assists individual chapters with their programming ideas, problem-solving and leadership development.

Gabrielle Carter-Felder

NPHC/MGC Advisor
Bio: 

Gabrielle is a proud alum of the university and joined the fraternity and sorority life community as a student in 2015, where she spent much of her time in the Fraternity and Sorority Life office.She has worked for AmeriCorp serving under resourced communities in high schools, working in healthcare and still serving in her sorority on the graduate level. Outside of her work with Michigan’s Fraternity and Sorority Life community, Gabrielle is in school pursuing aspirations of going to medical school and pursuing her childhood passion of working in the nail industry.

Cheyenne Chapman

Community Standards and Leadership Development Manager
Bio: 

Cheyenne graduated with her B.S. in Human Development and Family studies from Bowling Green State University and M.S.Ed in College Student Personnel Service from Arkansas State University. During her undergraduate time she worked in continuing education with the BGSU State Fire School and in pre-college programs as an intern for the American association of Undergraduate Women building programming and education for one of their summer camps. She worked professionally for about four years at Kettering University in Flint, MI as a Student Life Coordinator over Greek Life and Leadership.

Cheyenne Chapman

Shannon Cohen Benson

Associate Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life & Panhellenic Advisor
Bio: 

Shannon is the Associate Director with primary responsibility for the Panhellenic Association. Originally from California, she moved across the country and graduated with a B.A. in history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2008. After graduation she packed her bags for two years and traveled across the United States as a sorority consultant. Shannon landed in the Midwest in 2010 to get her Master's degree in Higher Education from the University of Michigan.

Kristie Filipchuk

Assistant Director for Organization Conduct
Bio: 

Kristie serves as the Assistant Director for Organization Conduct. In her role she supports student self-governance by working with the council leaders and chapter leaders to assess and strengthen policies, procedures, and member education;  coordinates the Hazing Response Team, and trains and coordinates the Greek Activities Review Panel (GARP), the governing body that responds to policy violation complaints and consists of student justices from all four fraternity and sorority councils.

Danielle Heinowski

Records Administrator
Bio: 

Danielle is the Records Administrator.  She has worked in various administrative settings, recently finished  her associates degree at Washtenaw Community College, and will be transferring to Wayne State to pursue a degree in Social Work that she hopes to use to help others. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their dog. She is excited to be joining the Fraternity and Sorority Life team.

 

Christine Kulka

Administrative Coordinator
Bio: 

In addition, to handling the day-to-day operations of the office, Chris assists the executive boards and chapters with navigating the campus as they plan events.  A graduate of the University of Michigan, she spends her time away from the office with her husband, son and 3 dogs.

Lauren Lewallen

IFC Advisor
Bio: 

Lauren Lewallen is a recent honors graduate of Central Michigan University as she graduated in December 2020. At CMU, Lauren pursued a baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education (K-5) with two add-on endorsements, Social Studies: History - Double Major (Grades 6-8) and Integrated Science Minor (Grades 6-8).

Jeannie Marks

Health & Well-being Specialist
Bio: 

Jeannie is the Health & Well-being Specialist for Fraternity & Sorority Life with the primary responsibilities of working with all four councils to promote chapter and individual wellbeing, as well as to provide education and resources around risk management and mental health. Jeannie recently graduated in December 2022 from the University of Michigan with her M.A. in Higher Education. In her coursework, she focused on student access, student success, and trauma-informed practice. Jeannie hails from the south, originally from Birmingham, Alabama.

Dr. Travis Martin

Associate Dean of Students and Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life
Bio: 

Travis earned a Ph.D. in College Student Affairs Administration from the University of Georgia, an M.Ed. in higher education leadership from the University of Arkansas, and a B.S, in biology from Mississippi Valley State University. He has a long list of scholarly accomplishments, including publications, presentations, and courses taught.

Graduate Interns

Allie Lawler

Communtiy Standards & Leadership Development Graduate Intern
Bio: 

Allie Lawler is an Environmental Justice Master’s student within SEAS at the University of Michigan. Prior to beginning her new adventure in Michigan, she grew up in Dallas, Texas and made a big move to Fort Collins, Colorado for her undergraduate experience in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability as well as Environmental Affairs at Colorado State University.

Caryn Wilson

Accountability Graduate Intern
Bio: 

Caryn attended the University of Arkansas– Fayetteville and received her BA in Psychology. After graduation, she joined the Teach For America Greater Tulsa 2017 Corps and taught 3rd and 6th grade reading for two years at Hamilton Elementary. After her corps experience, her and her husband, Taylor, moved back to Arkansas to be closer to family and welcome their first son Lewis! However, the ‘closer to family’ did not last long, because Taylor got accepted to the University of Michigan Law School and Caryn decided to start her Master’s in Higher Education at the University of Michigan.
