The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) was founded in 2002. Many of the fraternities and sororities within MGC were chartered at Michigan in the 1970’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s, prior to the council’s formation. The council celebrates and promotes multiculturalism through programming and service housed in several racial, ethnic, and cultural communities. These organizations were nationally founded after many historically African American fraternities and sororities were founded with the purpose of creating safe, culturally-enriched spaces and to serve the needs of students representing multiple cultures on college campuses. At Michigan, MGC currently has fraternities and sororities that are historically (but not exclusively) Latinx, East Asian, South Asian, Arab, and Multicultural.
