A Foundation Built on Fraternity and Leadership
Byron’s journey at Michigan began in the fall of 1983 when he joined Alpha Phi Alpha. As an only child entering college, he quickly recognized the value of building relationships and collaborating with peers. His fraternity became the foundation for his first leadership experiences, culminating in serving as chapter president during his senior year. These early lessons in teamwork, accountability, and vision-setting shaped his approach to both professional and personal growth.
Career Path: Leadership Across Industries
After earning his double major in Economics and Philosophy in 1985, Byron went on to earn an MBA from Stanford University in 1990. Equipped with the leadership skills fostered in his fraternity and his advanced education, he enjoyed a 25+ year career in marketing and senior management across media and higher education. Byron retired in 2022 as deputy chief of staff for the U-M College of Engineering, where his work strengthened operations, fostered collaboration, and supported faculty and student initiatives.
Commitment to Fraternity and Sorority Life and Community

He prioritizes meeting new U-M Alpha brothers every year, serves as an active member of the local alumni chapter, and is a proud Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Through his ongoing involvement, Byron demonstrates the lifelong value of fraternity membership, highlighting the connections, mentorship, and professional opportunities that fraternity and sorority life fosters.
Words of Wisdom for Current Members
Byron emphasizes the enduring impact of fraternity and sorority life beyond college: “Some of your strongest college relationships will develop within your fraternity or sorority. Preserve them after you graduate. Stay connected to those individuals and your local or national organization. Those bonds can yield sound advice, job connections, business partners, and friends for life.” His advice underscores the importance of building meaningful connections, embracing leadership roles, and remaining committed to the values that shape both personal and professional success.
Byron Roberts’ story is a testament to the transformative power of fraternity life. From his time as a student leader at Michigan to his career achievements and ongoing alumni engagement, Byron embodies the values of service, leadership, and brotherhood. His journey inspires both current and future fraternity and sorority members to embrace their experiences, cultivate lifelong connections, and make a lasting impact on their communities.
