Institutional Eligibility Criteria

The University of Michigan is committed to providing a best-in-class, first-year experience to help students make a successful transition to college, reach their full potential and thrive on campus and beyond. As such, participation in fraternity and sorority intake or recruitment at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor campus, requires that a student meets the following criteria as of Fall 2023:

  • Student must be enrolled in classes for the term in which they are participating in an intake or recruitment process.
  • Student must be considered in good standing** with their school/college and the Office of Student Conflict Resolution during the semester in which they are participating in intake or recruitment.
  • Student must have completed the Fraternity & Sorority Life Educational Module and the Impact Training module online and received a 100% score on the final quizzes.

*Please note that councils and chapters may have additional eligibility requirements.

** For the purposes of Fraternity & Sorority intake and recruitment, "good standing" is defined as when a student is not on academic probation per their school/college OR Disciplinary Probation as defined by Section VII.B of the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will Recruitment and Intake occur?

Recruitment and intake will occur during both semesters. Chapters and councils have determined the timelines that meet their needs. Visit the “"Join Us" page to learn more about recruitment and intake.

 

How does a student verify they met the criteria to participate in a recruitment or intake process?

Once a student has completed the required trainings (see the Join Us Page), log into the Recruitment and Intake Gateway (RIG) so criteria can be electronically verified.  

 

Why might a student show as not passing the enrollment criteria?

The following are possible reasons the institutional eligibility verification system will not show a student as passing the enrollment criteria:

  • Student is transferring to the University of Michigan and has not yet enrolled in classes. If this is true, see question on how to appeal eligibility status.
  • A student has changes schools or colleges within UM and the system hasn't updated registration status yet.

Do I have to be a currently enrolled student at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor Campus to be offered membership?

Yes. A student must be currently enrolled at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor campus. Additionally, a student must be enrolled at the time of recruitment or intake and when receiving an offer of membership.

 

If I feel I should be eligible due to special circumstances, what can I do?

What about non-traditional or part-time students?

Individual councils and chapters may have additional requirements for the number of credit hours enrolled in to be eligible for membership.

 

Are council and chapter requirements different from institutional eligibility?

Yes, Each of the four councils and the member chapters may have additional specific requirements for students to participate in a process, access an application to become a candidate, or be offered a bid. For more information please see the "Join Us” page.

 

What is the definition of good standing for the Recruitment and Intake Eligibility Statement?

Good standing is defined as when a student is not on academic probation per their school/college OR Disciplinary Probation as defined by Section VII.B of the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

 

Do the Recruitment and Intake Eligibility Criteria apply to students joining any fraternity or sorority?

At this time, the Recruitment and Intake Eligibility Criteria applies to a student wishing to be offered membership in a fraternity or sorority affiliated with Fraternity & Sorority Life at the University of Michigan (i.e. chapters in these councils: Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Association).

 

How many tries do I have to complete the final quizzes in the Fraternity & Sorority Life Education module and the Impact Training module?

You can retake the quizzes as many times as needed to get a 100% score on each final quiz.

 

Do first-year students who are part of deferred admissions programs (SMI, etc) that start in Winter term have to wait until week 6 of the Winter term before they can join?

 

No, first-year students who begin their academic career in the Winter term may join an organization at any time.
