As we begin the Winter 2021 semester, our council’s main goal is to ensure the safety and health of our community. Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19, we must operate in a cautious manner and make changes to what our community usually offers. To achieve our goal, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) has decided to suspended all in-person social programs/events (parties, yard shows, step shows, stroll competitions, and all social events that may similarly draw crowds) for chapters within the Fall semester, in accordance with guidance from the CDC, the State of Michigan, and under the guidelines provided by the Center for Campus Involvement for student organizations.
As we learn more about the impacts of COVID-19, we must be aware of how the virus disproportionately affects communities of color, and ensure that we are working to keep OUR community safe. With this knowledge, we must adjust to the circumstances and acknowledge how our previous methods of operation will not suffice for this semester. In a unanimous decision, the NPHC determined that the suspension of all in-person social programs was the appropriate course of action that will allow for the protection of our council and the campus community.
If any chapter within the NPHC violates these terms, they will be subjected to consequences. In addition to the consequence given by the NPHC (loss of calendar days for the Fall 2021 semester), chapters will be subject to any applicable judicial processes on behalf of Fraternity & Sorority Life and/or the Center for Campus Involvement. The NPHC is taking all necessary precautions to ensure we hold our chapters accountable for keeping our community safe.
This decision to suspend in-person social programming extends for the full Fall semester, and we will determine our plans for the Winter semester when we learn more from our state and university officials. Until then, it is our responsibility as student leaders to provide support and resources to the community. We urge the community to continue to practice social distancing, wear masks when in public spaces, and wash your hands frequently. If we all take care of each other and do our best to follow these guidelines, we can be a part of the solution.
