Academics

Members of the fraternity & sorority community at the University of Michigan recognize that the first priority of attending college is to attain a well-rounded education. Fraternities and sororities support their member’s academic success through tutoring, mentoring, educational seminars, and other helpful programs. Each chapter maintains minimum academic requirements for active membership.

Joining the Multicultural Greek Council

Each fraternity or sorority within the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) holds individual recruitment or intake events and has individual requirements for membership. If a student is interested in a specific organization he/she may contact a chapter's rush/new membership chair or attend a chapter-sponsored event. Students may also attend an MGC sponsored event in order to learn more about the council as well as the member organizations.

Joining the National Pan-Hellenic Council

Students interested in a National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) fraternity or sorority participate in a process called intake. NPHC holds various events throughout the year to introduce students to different organizations. In the fall, the council hosts a week of events referred to as NPHC Week. As part of NPHC Week, the council sponsors an Open House where individual fraternity and sororities present their objectives and disseminate information to prospective members. Each organization takes new members at different times throughout the year.

For Parents New to Fraternity and Sorority Life

Questions about activities specific to a certain chapter (i.e. move-in dates or other housing issues, parents’ weekend, chapter bills, etc.) should be directed to the chapter president. You can find contact information for fraternity and sorority presidents on our home page or on each council's page.  If you are uncomfortable discussing an issue with a student, the staff at Fraternity and Sorority Life can direct you to an alumni advisor, graduate advisor or the inter/national headquarters.
