Multicultural Greek Council

The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) was founded in 2002. Many of the fraternities and sororities within MGC were chartered at Michigan in the 1970’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s, prior to the council’s formation. The council celebrates and promotes multiculturalism through programming and service housed in several racial, ethnic, and cultural communities.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

The University of Michigan chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was chartered on October 21, 2005.  Prior to then, Michigan housed it’s historically African American fraternities and sororities in the Black Greek Association, a council created prior to being chartered with the NPHC nationally.  NPHC fraternities and sororities were founded during a time when Black students were prohibited from joining historically white fraternities and sororities due to discriminatory practices and policies in the early 1900s.

More Staff Support for Greek Life

After a national search, December 2, 2014 was the official start date for Shannon Cohen, Greek Life’s second Assistant Director.  With membership in Michigan’s Greek Community at an all-time high, additional university funding was welcome news.  In addition to a second AD, the funding allowed for the position of NPHC/MGC Advisor to be made permanent.
